It is after all an odd thought to pick a random day and decide to celebrate your love with special someone when that particualr day has no special meaning to you and your love. The reason for that goes back long, long ago.
It is said the story of Valentines Day begins during the height of the Roman Empire, which held a festival every February. This Lupercian Festival was held in honor of the God of Fertility. At this time young men would choose their mates. Marriage was a common occurrence at this point, but when Claudius became Emperor he changed all of that.
Fearing that men would refuse their duty to fight in his army because they would not want to leave their wives behind, he outlawed all marriages.
Reguardless of what Emeror Claudius wanted young couples still fell in love and still wished to marry. They took these desires to the Catholic Bishop Valentine; who believed strongly in love. He beleiving in love and marriage decided to help these young lovers by being officiate over their marriages.
When Emperor Claudius found out, he had Valentine arrested and sentenced to death. While languishing in jail, Valentine began exchanging letters with the jailer’s daughter and soon fell in love with her. The day he was to be beheaded, he wrote her one last letter to her and signed it: “From Your Valentine”. Unknowingly cementing his later name St. Valentine.
Lovers begain to celebrate love in honor of his sacrafice for lovers on the day he was exicuted. Valentine’s Day is a good reminder to appreciate the people you love in your life.
Have you the people most important to you that you love them lately?
