What's your Birthstone?
What's your Birthstone? What's your Birthstone?Garnet’s name is from the Latin word “granatus” meaning “seed like”. This stems from the fact that garnet crystals in their host rock appear in the shape & color of pomegranate seeds.
Garnet was known thousands of years before the Christian era, where it was considered a gem of faith, constancy, and truth as well as having curative properties. The garnet was often used in the crowns of kings and queens and was a favored jewel of religious leaders.
Garnet was also believed to protect and preserve the honor and health of travelers. All these powers of the garnet were believed to be double for those born in the month of January.

Commonly thought of as a dark red stone, it is actually a large family of gems occurring in every color but blue. Brilliant, colorful and durable, garnets have been found on every continent, but most are mined in Southeast Asia, Brazil and Africa.

Amethyst gets its name from the Greek word meaning ‘not to intoxicate'.

Myth has it that the god Bacchus who, offended by the neglect of the goddess Diana, vowed vengeance by declaring that the first person he met would be devoured by tigers. The beautiful maiden, Amethyst, crossed his path, and as the beasts sprang toward her, she called upon Diana for protection. Diana saved her by turning her into a pure, clear stone. Bacchus became repentant and atoned by pouring wine over the stone, imparting it with a lovely purple hue.
Because of this connection with Bacchus, the god of wine, it was believed that wine drunk from an amethyst cup would prevent the drinker from losing his wits.

Amethyst has been prized ever since, particularly by nobility, for its rich purple hues. It may be found in colors ranging from the palest lavenders to the deepest purple. Generally, the deeper the color the more highly prized the stone.

Most Amethyst is mined in Brazil, while Siberia, Uruguay and Canada also mine the gem. Since Amethyst is a relatively hard gem, it requires no special care.

What's your Birthstone? The green of Emerald is representative of life and spring time. In ancient Rome, it was the color that symbolized the beauty and love of the goddess Venus….More valuable than diamonds, fine-quality Emeralds of significant size are among the world’s most bewitching jewels. Their incomparable dark green color is produced only under extremely rare conditions. Because these conditions also result in tiny cracks and cavities in the stone, inclusions are acceptable in top-quality Emeralds.

Ancient history records Emerald mines near the Red Sea called “Cleopatra’s Mines”; this was where the Pharaohs gathered gems between 3000 and 1500 B.C. On the other side of the world, the Incas and Aztecs of South America once worshipped Emerald as a holy stone. History also speaks of the Maharajas of India, whose treasure vaults were filled with Emeralds – the gem they believed to bring luck and heath.

As a member of the Beryl family of gems, cousin to Aquamarine. Emerald is mined in Afghanistan, Columbia, Zimbabwe, India, Pakistan, and Russia.

Pearls have been a symbol of Love, happiness, wealth, honor and longevity across the globe for centuries. Pearls have been considered a wonderful Aphrodisiac when dissolved in wine, a gift of fertility when worn to bed or on the couples wedding day. Pearls have been worshiped and valued since the beginning of time.

A pearl is formed when an Oyster is irritated by a piece of sand or shell and begins to coat this intruder with nacre to protect it self. Over time this nacre grows thick and becomes a pearl! Over a lot of time (usually some where between 4-12 years) the nacre will grow thick enough to be harvested and be polished to see if it can become jewelry.

Pearls can come from either salt or freshwater sources. Typically, saltwater pearls tend to be higher quality, although there are several types of freshwater pearls that are considered high in quality as well. Freshwater pearls tend to be very irregular in shape, with a puffed rice appearance the most prevalent. Nevertheless, it is each individual pearls merits that determines value more than the source of the pearl.

The “King of Gems”, Ruby is one of the world’s oldest and most revered gemstones. It is also one of the rarest. Ruby, known in Hindu and Christian tradition as the “King of Precious Stones” is believed to preserve the physical and mental health of the wearer, as well as removing evil thoughts, lustful desires, and reconciling disputes.

A member of the corundum family (as is sapphire), the hardness of a ruby is only surpassed by that of a diamond. The mineral Chromium is responsible for the gem’s startling color. While the color can range from a pink-red to a purple-red, the most dramatic stones are a bright, intense red. Rubies with hardly any inclusions are so rare that large stones of good color get higher prices at auction than even diamonds.

Rubies are mined in Afghanistan, Cambodia, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Myanmar, Sir Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, and Pakistan.

What's your Birthstone? Its color ranges from springtime yellow-green to a warm-olive green. Peridot is also distinguished by its soft, velvety appearance. Color is the most important quality for peridots. Hence, the greener the peridot, the higher its value.

Although its name is simply a French word derived from the Arabic for green, Peridot has always been surrounded by complex superstitions. It was believed to inhibit enchantments, to protect its wearer from evil spirits, and to glow in the dark.

Prized by Egyptians and believed by Native Americans to have mystical powers, Peridot has been popular throughout history. There is evidence that the breastplate of the high priest Aaron contained Peridot as one of its twelve stones. These stones were credited with showing true spiritual preaching accompanied by miracles. Ancient belief held that Peridot has the ability to ward off fevers when carried under the tongue, and when powdered, to be a remedy for asthma.
There are only three major sources of supply for this gem; an island in the Red Sea, the gem gravels of Burma, and Arizona.
